The History of CPL

Since 1987, we have remained committed to Papua New Guinea, through the Communities and Customers we serve across the length and breath of the Nation. Our journey has evolved over time, and will continue as we strengthen our Commitment to Quality as PNG’s Favorite Retailer.

1987

City Pharmacy Branding

Sir Mahesh Patel, and the late Alan Jarvis establishes ‘The Pharmacy’, in Port Moresby at Garden City, Boroko with only four staff members. The Pharmacy would later be renamed into the brand we know today as ‘City Pharmacy’.

1992

Regional Expansion

City Pharmacy goes on to expand its operations by opening five pharmacy outlets in regional PNG.

1998

Operations after Crisis

At a time when tensions remained high, City Pharmacy makes history by becoming the first business house to commence operations in Buka, following the Bougainville Crisis.

2002

Port Moresby Stock Exchange

City Pharmacy Limited (CPL Group) lists on the Port Moresby Stock Exchange (PNGX:CPL).

2003

Real Reward Launches

CPL launches Real Rewards, becoming PNG’s first major points-based customer loyalty program, rewarding shoppers with points which can later be used to redeem products, and access to member-only offers.

2005

Acquisition of Stop and Shop

CPL Group acquires the Stop and Shop Supermarket chain from Steamships Trading Company.

2007

The First Women Empowerment Program

CPL launches the first Women’s Empowerment and Recognition Program in PNG, the Pride of PNG Women Awards, honoring extraordinary women doing extraordinary work in the Communities. This program is now managed by the CPL Foundation Inc.

2009

Acquisition of Hardware Haus

Following the acquisition of Stop & Shop four years prior, CPL acquires the Hardware Haus Chain of Hardware and Home Improvement Stores from Steamships Trading Company.

2010

Director of the year

Mahesh Patel named Director of the Year by the PNG Institute of Directors.

2011

Launch of Bon Café

CPL expands the Supermarket segment with the launch of Bon Cafe Coffee Shops, ushering a new era of coffee culture in PNG. Bon Cafe operated alongside the Stop & Shop Supermarkets

2012

Private Sector Employer of the Year

CPL Group is named Private Sector Employer of the Year by the PNG Human Resources Institute.

2013

Innovative Company of the Year

CPL is named Innovative Company of the Year by the PNG Institute of Directors. 

2013

Acquisition of Cost Save Pty Ltd

CPL Group also acquires Sydney, Australia-based pharmaceutical wholesaler Cost Save Pty Ltd.

2014

Opening of Waigani Central

CPL opens new concept shopping complex, Waigani Central, in Port Moresby. It features a do-it yourself hardware concept store, its largest ever Stop N Shop supermarket and its second Paradise Cinema complex.

2015

Opening of Jacks of PNG

CPL moves into fashion retailing and goes onto opening two Jacks of PNG stores in Port Moresby. CPL also opens two Prouds Duty Free stores at Jacksons International Airport.

2017

Gerehu Distribution Center fire

CPL Group’s Gerehu Distribution Center is devastated by the fires. This affects the supply chain of the business greatly. With the support of suppliers and communities, the company makes a swift recovery from the damages.

2018

Initiation of Business Transformation

Company recapitalised by K48 million

2020

Knight Bachelor

Sir Mahesh Patel, OBE is recognized in the Queen’s Birthday awards as a Knight Bachelor for services to PNG.

2021

Appointment of Navin Raju

Mr Navin Raju is appointed new Chief Executive Officer. ISO Accreditation: The Group is accredited to ISO 9001: 2015- Quality Management System and ISO 45001:2018- Occupational Health and Safety Management System Standards
