In Papua New Guinea (PNG), where traditional barriers often limit young women’s potential, education is more than a right – it’s a pathway to change. A recent session dedicated to empowering PNG women shed light on how education and career awareness are key tools for transforming lives, strengthening families and uplifting communities.

RISE is a transformative initiative that empowers students in their final two years of high school, equipping them with the tools and guidance to build a successful future. Over an 8-month period, selected students (mentees) are paired with dedicated mentors through a structured application and selection process. The program focuses on personal development, career readiness, and leadership. Each workshop focuses on a key theme and provides participants with frameworks, practical tools, resources, and guidance to access tertiary education and work experience opportunities. Workshops are highly engaging and interactive, featuring inspiring guest speakers, panel discussions, and contributions from Papua New Guinean women and leaders who help guide and shape the day.

This program aligns with City Pharmacy Limited (CPL) Foundation Inc.’s mission – the foundation firmly believes that the future is female and strives to empower women and girls in:

  1. Education and Literacy Programs
  1. Improved Health-Care Services
  1. Economic Empowerment Opportunities

Under the stewardship of Sir Mahesh Patel, OBE—founder of CPL Group and Chairman of CPL Foundation Inc.—the Foundation has partnered with Rise to support the program’s operations and delivery of workshops. This collaboration builds on CPL Foundation’s previous efforts, including a successful business mentorship program delivered in partnership with Australian Business Volunteers, which supported six talented and driven female entrepreneurs.

So far, three workshops have been held, with three more scheduled before the program concludes with a graduation ceremony in October 2025. The workshops take place once a month, involving 20 mentees from Tokarara Secondary School, their assigned mentors, and volunteers who assist in delivering the sessions. Guest speakers and guests, including Dame Meg Taylor, Dr Cecilia Nembou, Winnie Kiap CBE,

and other prominent female leaders from various industries, spoke to the girls about the realities of the corporate world and public service. They shared insights on the challenges, opportunities, and skills needed to succeed—helping to equip the next generation of female leaders with the confidence and knowledge to pursue their aspirations.

Completing high school is a privilege and a critical first step for many young girls across Papua New Guinea, this achievement is not just academic – it symbolizes resilience in the face of economic, social and cultural challenges. Educated women are better equipped to make informed decisions, support healthier families and play active roles in national development.
