The University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) Theatre Arts Division received a sponsorship valued at more than K5,000 from CPL Foundation. The sponsorship, which included items such as plywood, paint, floodlights, and other materials, will be used by the University of Papua New Guinea Theatre Arts division for the set of their upcoming production, The Fall of Aming. Present to receive the items included Production Manager, Pauline Philothrese Auro; Head of Division for Theatre Arts, Edith Monagi and Supervisor to the Production, Sophie Naime. The all-female production team is excited to bring The Fall of Aming to life with the support of CPL Foundation, which has now become a major sponsor of the show.
CPL Foundation Manager Deborah Alois stated apart from CPL Foundation’s commitment to empowering women and girls through its key area in health, education, and economic empowerment, the Foundation also supports requests outside these pillars, particularly in areas that resonate with the Foundation’s values. “This year, our founder, Sir Mahesh Patel, expressed a keen interest in supporting the theatre arts in PNG. We are especially proud to support an all-female-led production team, as it resonates with our focus on empowering women. We are happy to extend this support to the Theatre Arts students, as they prepare for their theatre production/stage performance,” said Alois.
For UPNG’s final-year theatre students, the support could not have come at a better time. The success of The Fall of Aming is crucial to their academic journey, as their major thesis depends on the theatre performance. Pauline Philothrese Auro, the Production Manager, expressed her gratitude, saying, “This support is a blessing for us. We have written to several organizations seeking help with our production, and CPL Foundation’s response has been consistent. Their support will have an impact on our future as aspiring performers and professionals in the performing arts.”
The story of the The Fall of Aming is inspired by a legend of the Morobe Province and aligns with this year’s creative theme of “Social Change and Cultural Revitalization.” It digs into ancient myths and explores themes of love, rebellion, and the consequences of divine intervention on earth. The narrative centers on Aming, the god of rebellion and civil order, who defies his fellow deities, bringing chaos to the world of mortals as he pursues his love for an earthly woman.
The Fall of Aming will be showing from the 7th to 11th October at the Ulli Beier Creative arts Auditorium, UPNG and is open to the public. Tickets are available for K10 each.
